Program Information
Edmonton Synchronized Skating Club offers high quality learn-to-skate lessons for all ice sports in southwest Edmonton. All sessions are instructed by Skate Canada certified coaches. We focus on high coach-to-skater ratios with an emphasis on skill development and fun on the ice! Learn more about Skate Canada's flagship Learn-To-Skate program here.
A current Skate Canada membership is required for all participants. This non-refundable fee is $61.65. Membership is valid from September 1 - August 31.

Pre-Star
(Learn-To-Figure Skate)
Pre-Star classes are designed for children who have passed Stage 3 Can-Skate and have an interest in continuing in recreational or competitive figure skating. Skaters will be introduced to fundamental figure skating skills, and classes are taught in a group format. Skaters will continue to access their CanSkate levels, and may progress to learning StarSkate skills when applicable.
Pre-Star skaters are recommended to wear figure skates and will continue to wear a CSA approved helmet until they have passed CanSkate Stage 5.
Required Equipment:
Skates:
For CanSkate, hockey or figure skates are acceptable. Before purchasing skates, check carefully for:
- proper fit,
- firm ankle support and
- correct blade placement.

Helmets
- CSA approved helmets are MANDATORY (with or without face cage)
- A hockey helmet is the ONLY acceptable helmet as they wrap around the back of the head and are designed to withstand repeated bumps
- Fit should be snug
Warm Clothing
- Clothing should provide warmth but not restrict movement
- Layering of sweat suits, sweaters, ski jackets and long underwear or leotards is recommended. Bulky snowsuits can hinder movement
- Warm mittens or gloves are a must
Etiquette:
- Please have your child at the arena on time, dressed and ready to go on the ice at the scheduled session time
- Please use the assigned dressing room. Signs are posted on the arena dressing room entries
- Parents DO NOT accompany their children on the ice. There is ample viewing space in the bleachers adjacent to the ice surface
- Parents are expected to remain in the arena at all times during the session. Parents may be flagged to assist with equipment problems or bathroom breaks as needed
Why sign up for Can Skate?
Can Skate is Canada's only national learn-to-skate program. It was developed by experts to teach the fundamentals of skating in a progressive and sequential manner.
When your child is registered for a Can-Skate program at ESSC, you also become a member of Skate Canada, the national sport governing body for figure skating in Canada. Membership benefits in the Can Skate program can include:
- badges
- stickers/tattoos
- colouring sheets
- parent information sheets
- progress updates and report cards
- special Can Skate events and club functions
- Can Skater of the Year award program
- opportunity to be talent-scouted
- opportunity to participate in a healthy lifestyle activity
What can I expect during a typical Can Skate session?
Your child's Can Skate session will include:
- Warm-up
- Lesson time -- new skill instruction, skill review and practice time
- Group activities
- Cool down
Report cards and earned badges are issued on the last day of the session. The six levels of the program are:
- Stage 1 -- Balance
- Stage 2 -- Glide Forward
- Stage 3 -- Glide Backward
- Stage 4 -- Edges
- Stage 5 -- Power
- Stage 6 -- Speed
